Countertops...
A kitchen needs a working surface... countertops!
There are many different types on the market now, lots of colors, sizes, thicknesses... a lot to consider!
My first countertop consisted of plywood from the floor construction, that I primed and then "faux finished" to look like marbel with a sponge!.. A few coats of a good varathane, and that lasted me a good couple of years. It gave me the chance to work in my kitchen and really think about what I wanted.
Consider what you do in the kitchen for your surfaces, I almost chose tiles myself, since we already had the plywood down, but I saw what trouble the grout lines good cause for someone clumsy like me, who tends to spill things!.. You need to have a good sealer on the grout lines. This is where your own wants, needs and personality come in.. Vision yourself working in your new kitchen, and consider the work top surface and think what you would like to see!.. Something modern?.. traditional? something robust and chic?.. elegant?.. things for you to consider. You need to take your time, because this is something you are going to want to live with for a long time, and enjoy. This is an investment in time and money!
Another great countertop surface is concrete.. it has become more popular and it can be colored and polished. You have to have a good sturdy set of cupboard bases and floor, but it looks very robust and yet elegant.
If you are looking for something different, I have found this great book on countertops, especially the concrete ones
